Juneau
In Juneau, we went on the highlight of our trip - a helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier, and hours of exploration and climbing on the ice.
All of these shots are taken from the helicopter. It was a great ride and sights on one of the clearest days of the summer.
The tour operator provided everything we needed.
Diana couldn't climb over the ripples of ice, so she had to take a long way around. Her guide even cut steps for her in the ice!
Adam didn't even know he was walking above this water fall.
This is where we will climb UP.
Adam quickly volunteered to be the first, ever, to scale The Wave.
Now thinking I should have turned around and walked face first!
It had been a tunnel, but it collapsed that weekend. Thus we were the first tour group to climb The Wave, because it wasn't there before! Glacier surfaces are constantly changing.
No, it's ice!
Notice the second climber in the background. There were two guides running two ropes.
This is as far as Diana made it.
Leaves blow in from around the glacier, and get iced in.
The second line looked harder. Adam had to have a go at it.
No, it wasn't this sloped - camera isn't straight. Sure looks impressive this way though, doesn't it?
It was a tough climb, especially after having done one already.
We anchored down and peered one at a time at a deep blue hole/tunnel carved by water.
There were two guides and six guests, but John here really helped Diana along the way.
We filled a water bottle from one of these streams. It was a big deal for the next couple of days to drink the glacier water, not the normal stuff.
before we walk.
Nice that we tied down again for these views.
Found this on our bed upon returning to our room. One of several towel animals, a cruise ship classic.
Adam poses in front of our ship.
Do you see the bald eagle across from the ship's port? Click to the next picture.
Zoomed in from the previous photo.
On the way back to the airport, we flew by our cruise ship.
